ROYAL OAK (WWJ) – Twelve students from Shrine Catholic High School in Royal Oak are leaving behind the comforts of home and heading to Nicaragua.

WWJ’s Laura Bonnell reports it’s all part of an eight day Mission Trip.

The music will differ and there won’t be any cell phones and definitely no internet.

Sister Mary Ann Wyllie says the students are leaving it all behind and will get a big reality check when they visit families who live in the city’s dump.

“It’s miles long but people actually live in the dump, they make their shelter out of whatever they find, and scrounge for their food,” said Wyllie.

The students will paint rain barrels with kids in grades three through five, do some planting on a farm, visit volcanoes and learn the native dance from local youth.

Senior Kayla Smith is nervous and excited: “And I think I’m most excited to make connections to people outside of my culture and really experience everything the trip has to offer me.”

Students are bringing down backpacks, books in spanish, crayons and pencils.
